Purify yourself at a temizusha

手水舎でのお清め

It used to be customary for worshippers to perform their misogi or ablutions prior to offering a prayer, but this is hardly ever done nowadays. Instead, purify yourself by cleansing your hands and rinsing your mouth at a temizusha (literally meaning “handwater hut”) located at the side of the path.

かつては参拝者が参拝前に禊（お清め）を行うのが慣習でしたが、今日ではめったに行われません。代わりに、参道の脇にある手水舎で手を洗い、口をすすぎ、身を清めます。

① Take a ladle with your right hand and fill it with water.
　 右手で柄杓（ひしゃく）を取り、水を汲みます。
② Pour some of the water onto your left hand to cleanse it.
　 水を左手にそそぎ、清めます。
③ Take the ladle with your left hand and cleanse your right hand.
　 左手で柄杓を持ち、右手を清めます。
④ Take the ladle with your right hand again. Pour water in your cupped left hand and rinse your mouth.
　 Don’t drink the water. The ladle should not come into direct contact with your mouth since they are for public use.
　 再び右手で柄杓を持ちます。丸めた左の手のひらに水を受け、口をすすぎます。
　 水は飲み込みません。柄杓は公共用のため、直接口につけてはいけません。
⑤ Pour water over your left hand to cleanse it again.
　 水を左手にかけて再び清めます。 
⑥ Put the ladle back down and cleanse it by trickling water over it before putting it back to where it was.
　 柄杓を立てにして、水を伝わらせるようにして清め、元の場所に戻します。
